Fruit Butters - A Smooth-Spreading Jelly/Jam Substitute
Many of us learned food preparation from close relatives that we have continued using throughout our lives. The information that is passed down is a way to both honor those family members that shared as well as take us back to the days when life seemed more simple. These are the recipes that we share with those closest to us and become a way to invite new people into our lives in a way that we want to get to know better. And sometimes, they are the base for launching a business.
Fruit Butters was founded on just such a recipe/technique. Camden, the founder or Fruit Butters and self-proclaimed foodie, was first taught how to make, and can, peach butter by her mother using Georgia peaches purchased from the peach truck. This was a family recipe and quickly became Camden’s favorite summer treat. In 2020, Camden found herself with way too many peaches that she purchased from the peach truck and turned them all into peach butter that she intended to give away to family and friends. A nudge from her husband, David, persuaded her to give the Pittsboro farmer’s market a try and the peach butters were an immediate hit! The business has taken off since that time with Camden welcoming Natalie as a business partner. With Natalie’s assistance, Fruit Butters are now sold in eleven stores and the business continues to grow!
Using fresh, ripe, and in-season fruit is always the base for making any product. Fruit Butters sources all of their fruit from local or small farms, sharing the sources on their website (along with recipes and other useful information). Using only top quality ingredients ensures the freshness that is needed to make only the best product for you to share with your family. After the fruit, additional organic ingredients are added to get the best flavor in each jar of Fruit Butters (and despite the name, there are no dairy products in the recipes).
When trying Fruit Butters for the first time, Camden recommends going with the original peach butter, Sweet Georgia. This is the fruit butter that launched the business and the one that most commonly makes people fall in love with the brand. Prices start at $9 for the jars of fruit butters and can be obtained through local pick up, finding Fruit Butters at a market around the Indianapolis area, or requesting that they are shipped to you from Brownsburg, IN.
