Sarah Anderson Ceramics - bringing characters to life

I absolutely love this character!!! So much personality

For day 4 of Ceramics Week, we wanted to feature Sarah Anderson Ceramics. We first heard of Sarah through our mutual friend, Marret (read an earlier blog about Marret here: https://www.shopdifferentmidwest.com/home/marretmetzgerstudio-2sp3a ) and started to follow Sarah’s journey through her Instagram account.

Sarah graduated from Ball State University as a sculpture major before spending three years working at the Indianapolis Arts Center as the ceramic department chair. Sarah was drawn to leave the Indianapolis Arts Center in order to pursue her own work which seems to be going quite well.

The colors on this wall piece are stunning!!!

Sarah, like many of the artists that we have featured, has a signature style that is easily recognized once one becomes familiar with her work. Using the sgraffito technique, whimsical characters are revealed in the pieces that are then glazed with vibrant colors. The characters present as lighthearted and fun and show personality through the detailed facial expressions that Sarah adds to her work.

These days, while the Indianapolis area still operates as a de facto home base, Sarah spends more of her time on the road traveling to teach courses. I was fortunate to meet Sarah at a studio sale a couple of years ago when she was back in town and was able to pick up a mug that is on permanent display in my home.

Visit Sarah’s home page by clicking the link below to see more of her work, learn about her travels, and other happenings (like a studio opening next year). Also, give her a follow on Instagram to see updates on her travels and plenty of content about her dog, Pip.

A collection of some of Sarah’s work sharing a theme.
