Traci Patterson Photography

Red Headed Woodpecker

For day 2 of 2D week, we wanted to feature a wildlife photographer from Brownsburg, Indiana. We first met Traci Patterson through a Facebook post where she shared some of her work. There was a particular photograph of a Northern Flicker that I knew immediately that I needed.

As a lover of the outdoors, I’m always looking for ways to see it more often and bringing in nature-themed items into my home is a great way to do that. I have built a collection of nature-themed mugs but those are typically used for a short while each day before being washed and placed back in a cupboard. Finding a painting or photograph is the best way to have something permanently visible in your home and I have been slowly adding to that side of my collection.

Traci primarily focuses on bird photography but has other wildlife, floral, and even some still shots of pottery on her social media accounts. I have attempted to do photography before but lacked the knowledge and patience to do it well. The variables in photography are challenging to figure out and relying on the auto settings on a camera will leave you with an image that is likely dull and require multiple rounds of editing to clean up, if its even possible. Time of day, camera settings, background, direction of the shot, and knowledge of your intended subject’s likely movements all need to be known and tracked through trying to capture that perfect shot.

When you visit Traci’s Instagram or Facebook page and decide that you would like a print, she will work with you on framing, mattes, and even the glass types to make sure the picture will show well for the space you intend to place it. While I went in with an idea of what I wanted, I quickly decided to give Traci the freedom to do what she thought would be best and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Make sure you give her a follow on Instagram or Facebook and pick up a print if one speaks to you.
